Michael McGlynn graduated with Honours from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in January 1971. He did General Surgery then Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery training at the Prince of Wales Hospital, Prince of Wales Children’s Hospital, and Prince Henry Hospital Group in Sydney and at Canniesburn Hospital in Scotland. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS). He has been a Councillor of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons, President of the NSW Chapter of Plastic Surgeons, Supervisor of Training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Chair of the NSW Regional Training Sub-committee of the RACS, and Chair of the Board of Training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of the RACS for
Australia and
New Zealand.
He is Clinical Director at Sydney Children’s Hospital,
Randwick , with responsibility for surgery, anaesthesia, intensive care, cardiac services, gastroenterology and rehabilitation & brain injury. He is also a Conjoint Senior Lecturer at the UNSW. As well as his Children’s Hospital work he has a busy adult plastic and reconstructive surgery practice at the Prince of Wales Private Hospital.
He is a member of the Clinical Council of the NSW Clinical Excellence Commission. The CEC reports to the Minister for Health with a focus on supporting improvement in clinical quality and patient safety. His professional interests include Clinical Governance and Quality Practice Improvement, undergraduate and postgraduate education.
He became an Interplast Australia (IA) volunteer in 1985 and has done over 20 programs to Kiribati, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Samoa, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.
He has been a member of the IA Surgical Committee 1988-1997, Member of the IA Board of Directors since 1991, Chair of the IA Development Committee from its inception until 2005 and a member of the IA Executive Committee. He currently manages the Interplast programs to Myanmar and the Philippines. In 2002 he served on the AusAid Burma (Myanmar) Community Health Panel.
He is married with two sons and a daughter. His wife, Deirdre, is a Registered Nurse who has done a similar number of voluntary programs with IA.
The team at Interplast Australia congratulate Dr Michael McGlynn for being awarded the medal of the Order of Australia OAM in the Australia Day 2007 Honours List.
