David Hunter-Smith is a Reconstructive Plastic Surgeon (MBBS FRACS) with a special interest in Reconstructive Microsurgery, Hand Surgery, Public Health, and foreign aid surgery.
He trained in Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, USA, and Holland.
He is a member of the Board of Plastic Surgery for the RoyalAustralasianCollege of Surgeons (Vic), and supervises advanced training in Plastic Surgery for the Peninsula healthcare network (Vic). He is a member of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons, ASAPS, IPRAS, and is a corresponding member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
He is an active volunteer surgeon for Interplast Australia and has participated in many programs to The Pacific, PNG, Myanmar, Nepal and Bangladesh.
He sits on the Surgical committee of Interplast Australia and is the country co-ordinator for Bangladesh and Nepal.
His work in Bangladesh includes assisting in the development of an advanced surgical training program, development of rural cleft lip and palate services (over 3000 incident cleft lip and palate cases are still un-repaired every year in Bangladesh), microsurgery training, the development of occupational and speech therapy services, and he is working on the development of a surgical outreach program, and training scholarships (in Australia) for senior Bangladeshi and Nepalese trainee surgeons.
He is the Patron of the Australia Bangladesh Foundation.
He is currently studying the Masters in Public Health (International Studies) degree at MonashUniversity, and has a particular interest in long-term development and sustainable surgical outreach in developing countries.
He has a busy surgical practice on the Mornington Peninsula working as a consultant Plastic Surgeon for the Peninsula Health care network and privately.
He keeps fit cycling and surfing on the MorningtonPeninsula, is married to Gabrielle, and is busy with 3 teenage children.
