Prof Donald Marshall AM graduated from the University of Melbourne Medical School in 1957 with honours in every subject.He received his general surgical training at the RoyalMelbourneHospitalwith Sir Edward Hughes and Sir Edward Dunlop and obtained his FRACS in general surgery in 1962.
He trained in plastic surgery with Sir Benjamin Rank and was appointed Robert Fowler Travelling Fellow of the Anti-Cancer Council of Victoria in 1964. Prof Marshall made a particular study of immediate reconstruction following head and neck cancer surgery in the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
He returned to medical practice in Melbournein 1965 in partnership with Sir Benjamin Rank and in 1968 was appointed Head of Plastic Surgery at Prince Henry’s Hospital and later Monash Medical Centre, where he established the training programme in plastic surgery.He was appointed Associate Professor of Surgery at MonashUniversityin 1991.
Prof Marshall has held various offices in plastic surgery and was chairman of the Division of Plastic Surgery of the RoyalAustralasianCollegeof Surgeons from 1974 – 1976.He made significant contributions to repair after head and neck cancer surgery, but more particularly to breast reconstruction following mastectomy, a subject on which he was published widely.Prof. Marshall has been an invited international lecturer on many occasions, in Australia, New Zealand, South East Asia, Europeand United States of America.
Prof Marshall has been awarded the Medal and International Medal of the Australasian College of Surgeons and in 1999 was made a Member of the Order of Australia. Professor Marshall has been involved with Interplast since its foundation in 1983 and held the position of President for 16 years from 1993 to 2009. He retired from active surgery in 2008 and was also awarded the distinguished Prince Henrys medal for his outstanding contribution to the field of Plastic Surgery. Professor Marshall was elected as the inaugural Patron of Interplast Australia & New Zealand at the 2009 AGM.
Author of two books on plastic surgery “Your Face in their Hands” and “Your Breasts and Plastic Surgery” Professor Marshall now performs medico-legal work and is a very active and passionate Patron and supporter of Interplast Australia & New Zealand.
