Volunteer

Interplast conducts approximately 30 programs of plastic and reconstructive surgery to South East Asia, the Pacific and Africa annually.  Teams usually consist of two plastic surgeons, two anaesthetists and two registered nurses (theatre nurse and ward nurse).  All volunteers must be currently registered with their peak Australian or New Zealand medical body.

Programs are usually conducted for two weeks and Interplast provides a return airfare, accommodation and meals for all volunteers.  All teams are provided with the medical supplies and equipment for the program.  It is important that teams minimise extra demands on local facilities and we supply teams with enough equipment & supplies for the duration of the program.  Most teams travel with approximately 12 cases of equipment weighing an average of 250kgs.

The structure of the program is determined by the local country co-ordinator, however most programs run a clinic on the first working day and patients are identified for surgery.

In some cases selected patients may be approved by the Board for treatment in Australia.  Team recommendations for such patients must include patient history, photography and copy of any relevant x-rays.  There is a limit to the number of patients which can be supported.
